Don't fancy being 'down in dumps' this weekend?

As the weather warms up, more and more people want to visit their nearest recycling centre - often resulting in queuing at busy times.

Here's our five-point plan to beat the 'springtime stampede' to the 'tip' ... or Recycling and Re-use Centres as we call them nowadays!

  1. Avoid the busiest times if possible – generally weekends and in particular the peak hours of 11.00am – 1.00pm. Mondays can also be pretty busy after a fine or warm weekend.
  2. Around a third of the material deposited at recycling centres could have been picked up in the fortnightly kerbside collection. Contact your local district or borough council if you need larger or additional recycling containers.
  3. Make the most of your green wheeled bin for green garden waste and food waste or get a cut-price compost bin for your garden (see below for details).
  4. Give away unwanted goods and materials ‘too good to tip’ through online reuse networks such as Freegle and Freecycle, or donate to charity shops or furniture reuse schemes. See also 'Aladdin's Caves' feature below on recycling centre charity re-use shops.
  5. Take advantage of late opening (at most sites) until 6.15pm on Wednesdays during summer months (1 April - 30 September).

Rewards for recycling £££

There are chances to earn rewards and win prizes with our two recycling reward schemes:

  • Slim Your Bin is a four-week bin slimming programme with potential rewards for your household and selected local good causes.
  • Meanwhile the In to Win food waste recycling scheme offers the chance to win monthly prizes.

Congratulations to Alice Hardman - one of our recent winners. A delighted Alice said:

"My mum runs a scrapstore, so I'm really excited to be one of the first winners of a Slim Your Bin prize, as I think she'll be really proud of me. My husband and I recycle and reuse everything we can, and I think this is a really good way to encourage people to think a little more about what they recycle and reuse, and to get creative with it."

MetalMatters in Warwick District

The MetalMatters campaign was launched in Warwick District in Oct 2015, funded by the MetalMatters industry partnership and SUEZ Recycling and Recovery UK. The campaign was a success, seeing a 28% increase in the amount of metal packaging recycled by households in their red recycling boxes in just 6 months - the equivalent of 2.2kg of additional material recycled by every household in the district.

Please note - if you're NOT a Warwick District resident, your collection system will be different to the one shown in the video but you 'can' still recycle metal containers together with bottle and jar tops. See for more information.

Well done Warwickshire for feeding your green bins!

Well done, Warwickshire residents for helping to peg the county's Recycling, Composting and Re-use Rate for 2015-16. Together we've bucked the national trend by recycling 54.1% of household waste - just 0.1% less than 2014-15 and well ahead of the England target of 50% by 2020.

Playing a big part in this success is the award-winning Warwickshire food waste recycling programme which is:

  • diverting thousands of tonnes from the waste stream;
  • delivering significant savings for the public purse;
  • avoiding around 3,000 tonnes of CO2 each year

Already honoured in four national and international awards, the project has now been nominated for another top title:
